For centuries, metal braces were the treatment of choice for straightening teeth. They are still frequently used today, but many people are turning to Invisalign instead. “The clear alternative to braces,” Invisalign uses clear, smooth, medical grade aligners to gently shift the teeth into position.
What Is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a different approach to straightening teeth that uses a custom-made series of removable, nearly invisible, comfortable aligners. You will wear each set of aligners for two weeks or as instructed, and then change to the next set at home. You will only need to see the dentist for checkups every four to six weeks.
3-D Modeling
The first step in Invisalign treatment is to create a 3-D digital model of your existing smile. We will then morph this model to show you every stage of your treatment, including the end results.
Aesthetics and Comfort
Although it can be frustrating, the reality is that first impressions matter. Many people are self-conscious about dating, interviewing for jobs, meeting with clients, or having their picture taken when wearing braces. Since Invisalign is nearly invisible, no one but you needs to know that you are wearing it.
Braces are not always the most comfortable. The wires and metal brackets can poke and scratch your tongue and the insides of your cheeks, and adjustments can be frankly painful. Invisalign aligners induce gentle, more comfortable shifting of the teeth, and have no rough edges to cut or scratch.
Daily Life
Your dentist is fully in control of metal braces. He or she puts them on your teeth, adjusts them, and eventually removes them. If you pop a wire or loosen a bracket, you need to make an emergency visit. You cannot eat foods such as sticky candy or popcorn, and you must make huge changes to your oral hygiene routine.
With Invisalign, you are in control. Your dentist will place attachments on your teeth, teach you how to get the aligners in and out of your mouth, and keep an eye on how your treatment progresses. You will change aligners as instructed, and are free to pop out your aligners for oral hygiene or to eat your favorite foods.
Pricing
It is true that metal braces may be less expensive than Invisalign, but this is not always the case. When comparing prices, be sure to consider all costs. Upgrades such as colored metal increase the price of braces, as do adjustments and emergency visits. Invisalign uses a transparent pricing model that includes all dentist visits.
Dental insurance may or may not cover Invisalign treatment. Our office staff will help you sort through your plan to determine your coverage and learn how much you will need to pay out of pocket.
